Who We Are

Federation of Informal Workers' Organizations of Nigeria

The voice and strength of Nigeria's informal workers — organizing, empowering and advocating for dignified livelihoods and fair working conditions nationwide.

Our Identity & Purpose

A national network of organizations and community groups of informal, self-employed working people committed to improving working and living standards across Nigeria's economy.

Our Foundation

The Federation of Informal Workers' Organizations of Nigeria (FIWON) is a national network of organizations and community groups of informal, self-employed working people committed to improving the working and living standards of these working people in the informal sectors of the Nigerian economy.

FIWON engages government at all levels to promote knowledge driven initiatives to advance the socio-economic rights of informal workers. Over 170 organizations of informal workers across 21 states of the federation with members engaged in the agriculture, food production and supply chains, household materials supply and processing, artisans engaged in petty manufacturing, fabrications, repairs and construction, shoe makers, including those engaged in footwear, clothing and garment making, transportation and vehicle repairs, waste picking and recycling, market vending and retailing etc, are affiliated to FIWON.

While the informal economy in Nigeria employs over 80% of the working population including those engaged in agricultural production, the workers and operators in the informal sector are often inadvertently excluded from public decision-making processes and basic social security provisions.

FIWON provides a common platform of informal self-employed working people in Nigeria to express their needs and challenges, aggregate the best rights-based approaches to address these needs and advocate for the amelioration of these problems in a participatory way.

Our Vision

To achieve greater productivity in the informal economy, better living and working conditions of informal workers in Nigeria through improved capacities for self-representation.

  • Organize and unite informal workers across Nigeria
  • Advocate for the rights and interests of informal workers
  • Promote better working and living conditions
